The $80 Pass That Gets You Into 2,000+ Parks for Life

The America the Beautiful Senior Pass costs $80 once and covers entry to 2,000+ federal sites for life. Who qualifies, what's included, and how to buy it.

A scenic U.S. national park landscape

If you're 62 or older, this is one of the best deals the federal government offers, and a surprising number of people who qualify have never heard of it. Pay $80 once and you get into more than 2,000 national parks and federal recreation sites for the rest of your life.

What it is

It's the America the Beautiful Senior Pass, a lifetime pass for U.S. citizens and permanent residents aged 62 and up. The lifetime version is $80, paid once. There's also a cheaper annual senior pass if you'd rather not put down the full $80 right away.

The deal

$80 once, free entry for life

One payment of $80 covers your entry to over 2,000 federal recreation sites, including national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges, for the rest of your life. At sites that charge by the car, it covers everyone riding with you.

What you actually get

  • Free entry at national parks and federal lands that charge an entrance fee. Where the fee is per vehicle, the pass covers the driver and everyone in the car.
  • 50% off some amenity fees, like camping, swimming, and boat launches. It may not apply to fees charged by outside concessionaires.

How to buy it

As of January 1, 2026, you can buy the pass instantly as a digital version on Recreation.gov, so there's no waiting for one to show up in the mail. You can also pick one up in person at a federal site that charges an entrance fee, or order it by mail. To get the senior price, bring proof of age and residency. A driver's license usually does both.

Buy it before you go

The digital pass means you can have it on your phone before you leave the house. If you're road-tripping through several parks, buying once at the start covers all of them.

Lifetime or annual?

The math is easy. A single park's vehicle fee often runs $20 to $35. Visit even a few fee-charging sites over the next few years and the $80 lifetime pass already pays for itself, then keeps saving you money for good. The annual pass only makes sense if you're unsure you'll keep traveling, and its cost can count toward the lifetime pass within the same year at some outlets, so ask.

This goes hand in hand with the rest of our senior travel guide, and it's one of the discounts in 27 senior discounts people forget to ask for.
